You Can See Every Ad the Yard Across Town Is Running

October 15, 2026•3 min read

Drive past a competitor's yard and you learn things. What is parked out front, what is missing from the back rows, whether the lot is full on a Tuesday in June. Nobody thinks of that as spying. It is visible from the road.

Their Google Ads are visible from the road too. Google publishes them, for free, to anyone who looks. Most rental owners have no idea this exists, and the ones who do have never opened it.

Where to look

It is called the Ads Transparency Center. No account, no cost, no tool to install.

You search by company name or by website domain, pick the region, and you get the ads that advertiser has been running. Search ads, display, YouTube. You can see the actual headlines, the actual descriptions, and roughly when each ad was last showing.

Start with the three or four yards you lose jobs to. Then do the nationals in your market, because their ad copy is written by people who test it constantly, and it is sitting there for free.

What you are actually looking for

Not ads to copy. Four things that are more useful than that.

Which machines they push. If a competitor is running ads for six categories and three of them are categories you also carry, those are the auctions you are paying the most in. If they are running nothing for a category you own well, that is a cheap lane.

What they promise. This is the valuable part. Read the headlines and write down every promise being made in your market. Free delivery. Same day. Open Saturdays. Monthly rates. 24 hour service.

Whether they are advertising at all. Plenty of yards are not. If the two biggest independents in your county are running no search ads, that explains why your clicks are cheap and tells you to press while that lasts.

The gap is the point

Here is where most people get this wrong. They open the tool, look at the competitor with the biggest presence, and copy his headlines. Now there are two ads in the auction saying the same thing, and the customer picks on price.

Do the opposite. Lay all the ads in your market side by side and find the promise nobody is making.

Usually there is an obvious one. Every yard in town says family owned and great service, and not one of them says delivered to your jobsite before 7am, or weekend counts as one day, or we answer the phone on Sunday. If you can actually do that thing, you now have the only ad in the auction that says it. That is worth more than matching somebody else's wording.

What it will not tell you

It does not show keywords. You cannot see what they bid on, what match types they use, or what they negate.

It does not show money. Spend, budgets, bids, none of it. A yard spending a small amount a month and one spending a fortune look identical in there.

While you are in there, look yourself up

Search your own domain and read your ads the way a contractor would.

Two things tend to turn up. Ads you forgot were running, sometimes for machines you no longer carry or a promotion that ended two seasons ago. And the realization that your own headlines say nothing your competitors are not also saying.

If you have an agency, this is also the quietest audit available to you. You can see exactly what is live in your name without asking anybody for a report.

The short version

Your competitors' ads are as public as their lot. The tool is free, it takes twenty minutes, and almost nobody in your industry uses it.

Do this now: look up your three closest competitors and your own domain, and write down every promise being made in your market. The one nobody is making is your next ad.
