How to Win the Google Maps "Local Pack" for Your Rental Yard
When someone searches "scissor lift rental near me," the three businesses in the map box get the clicks. That box — the Local Pack — is ranked by a different system than ads, and it's one you can climb without paying per click. Here's why your competitor is above you, and how to fix it.
The Local Pack runs on three things: relevance (does your profile match the search), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how established and well-reviewed you look). You can't move your yard, but you own the other two.
Your Google Business Profile is the engine — most rental yards half-fill it. Fixes that move the needle:
Primary category exactly right ("Equipment rental agency," "Construction equipment rental service") and every relevant secondary category added.
Full service and product list — every equipment category you rent, spelled out. This is how you become "relevant" for "boom lift rental" specifically.
Reviews, steadily. Volume, recency, and responses all feed prominence. A competitor with 120 recent reviews will usually sit above your 15, even if you're closer. This is often the single biggest gap.
Photos of real equipment and your yard, updated. Consistent name, address, and phone number everywhere online (citations).
Why your local competitor outranks you for "near me": almost always more reviews, a more complete profile, or a stronger local link/citation footprint — not a secret. It's the compounding result of doing the boring profile work consistently.
And where Local Service Ads fit: LSAs (the "Google Guaranteed" ads above the Local Pack) are excellent when you're eligible — but most equipment-rental categories aren't covered the way plumbers or electricians are. Check eligibility before you plan around them; don't assume.
Do this Now: Open your Google Business Profile side by side with the competitor beating you. Compare review count, categories, and how complete each profile is. The gaps you see are the ranking difference. Start with a systematic review-request habit — it's the slowest to fake and the strongest signal.
